Floating tablets rarely dissolve at a reproducible weight. Using a spiral sinker in Apparatus 2 fixes the tablet to a certain point and aids reproducibility. Spiral sinkers can also be useful where tablets may stick to the sides of the vessel.

Type 316 stainless steel sinkers are more durable than coated sinkers.
